Am I the only one who purposefully avoids the snack aisle at the grocery store so that I don’t accidentally eat an entire bag of potato chips in 24 hours (or in one hour, let’s be honest)?  If you are going to snack, it’s best to make them at home, right? You can control the ingredients and the sodium all the while having a little fun in the kitchen with the family.

Spiralizer-Potato-Chips-1st

Next time you start craving potato chips, try this recipe. We decided to make a mixture or potato chips and sweet potato chips because we liked variation of colour and flavour but you could fry a full batch of one or the other, depending on your preference.

Spiralizer-Potato-Chips-2nd

Heat oil to 375 degrees in a deep fryer. Using the ribbon disc, make potato ribbons using the 3-in-1 Spiralizer. The Test Kitchen found that potatoes can be peeled or unpeeled but it is best to peel the sweet potatoes before spiralizing.

Spiralizer-Potato-Chips-3rd

Place a single layer of potato ribbons in the deep fryer basket and fry for 1-2 minutes until the potatoes are golden brown and crisp. Lift the basket to drain the potatoes and transfer the chips to a paper towel-lined plate or tray to finish draining.

Spiralizer-Potato-Chips-4th

We topped our homemade spiralized potato chips with coarse sea salt but you could add any of your favourite seasonings to spice up your chips. Smoked paprika, Old Bay, garlic salt or cayenne pepper would all add flavour to these crispy chips. These won’t last long so grab a bowl and serve immediately.

Halloween is coming soon, and we’re excited about all the costumes, parties and kids trick-or-treating. Whether you prefer your costume to be funny or cute, silly or scary, everyone can agree this Halloween graveyard-themed party dip is a hit.

Despite its appearance, this dip is actually really easy to put together. You just need a 9×13 casserole dish or lasagna pan, a ton of spinach dip, and some crackers, veggies and chopped kalamata olives. Additional decorations like the skulls and pumpkins can be found at most craft stores this time of year.

To make the headstones in the graveyard, we used crackers with a unique shape. There are many types of cracker shapes out there, so you can use whatever look you prefer. Write on the crackers with an edible decorative marker, and place them firmly into the spinach dip. Sprinkle chopped kalamata olives in front to look like fresh dirt.

In the midst of costumes, candy, tricks and treats, the last thing on anyone’s mind is getting a healthy and well-balanced dinner on Halloween night. But what if you could do just that without a lot of hassle or prep? And what if your kids actually wanted to eat what you made them? That’s where these adorable Halloween-themed stuffed peppers come in to save the day – or night.

Use orange peppers to make little pumpkins by cutting out a traditional jack-o-lantern face. Stuff it with plain rice or blend rice, meat and veggies from the grocery store hot foods bar, pop the top back on and serve. It’s really that easy, and you end up with a very entertaining meal in a secretly healthy vessel.

To make a witch, use green peppers and make cutouts for the eyes and mouth. Cut out a circle in the middle, and insert the stem of the pepper to make a pointy witch nose. It’s okay if it’s not perfect. Wicked witches are known for their moles and warts anyway! Stuff it, cut out a paper hat and your kids can decide if this is a good witch or bad witch. Happy Halloween and have fun !!

Summer fruits at their peak, and peaches are one of my absolute favourites. There’s something about biting into a juicy, ripe peach that brings to mind carefree summer fun, when it doesn’t matter so much if you get a little messy.

I still love eating fresh peaches, but I love peaches in other ways my family can enjoy, too. Peach cobbler combines the perfect sweetness of dessert pastry crust with that summer flavour I love. A hint of ginger and lemon add a little hidden zing.

peach-cobbler-toaster-oven-13

This cobbler is really easy to make. For the filling, toss together sliced fresh peaches, brown sugar, cornstarch, lemon juice and ginger until the cornstarch is dissolved and the peaches are coated. This will help the cobbler mixture thicken as it cooks, so it develops that signature syrupy coating over the fruit.

The fruit mixture is topped with the pastry mix – a blend of flour, sugar, baking powder, lemon zest, salt, butter and milk – which creates a biscuity crust you’ll want to use to scoop up all the peaches. It can bake in a regular oven, or if you have a toaster oven, use it to keep the kitchen from overheating in the pit of summer. (Get it? Pit?) Top it with some vanilla ice cream while it’s warm, so you can get a little warm peach cobbler and cool ice cream in each bite.
