Halloween is right around the corner and everyone is starting to plan costumes, trick or treating routes, and parties. While I think every child (and admittedly, some adults – myself included) would agree that Halloween is all about the candy, it’s also is a great time time of year for crafting and cooking with the kids. While there are tons of recipes – like our Halloween Graveyard Party Dip – and crafts to get you in the spirit, we liked the idea of crafting in the kitchen and making our own marshmallow pops. Not only are they delicious, the kids can use their imagination creating their favourite creepy creatures.

All you need is a slow cooker, candy melts, marshmallows (either store-bought or homemade) and popsicle sticks. We picked up candy melts and popsicle sticks at a craft store. We chose white, orange, green and yellow candy melts for our pops but any color would work. Black, purple, you name it.

Set your slow cooker to LOW and stir the candy melts often for about 30 minutes until they are completely melted. Candy melts can thicken easily, so add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to thin the mixture if you find it difficult to dip the marshmallows. You could also melt the candies over the stovetop and transfer them into a small slow cooker to keep warm for easy-dipping.

Once you dip the marshmallows in the candy melt color (or colors, like the cute candy corn-inspired pop) of your choice, start decorating. We dipped some in orange and black sprinkles, added googly eyes to others, and decorated some with our favourite candy.

If the kids have friends over one night or if you want a fun, festive activity that the whole family will enjoy,  get the slow cooker out and make these spooky marshmallow pops.

Halloween Marshmallow Pops

While candy seems to get all the (deserving) attention on Halloween, there are plenty of ghoulish goodies you can make to celebrate. From jack-o-lantern-looking stuffed peppers, to graveyard dip, this is the perfect time of year to pull out your best tricks in the kitchen.

These Halloween popcorn mixes are a perfect snack to serve at a Halloween party, munch on during a scary movie, or to bag for the kids’ lunches in October. If you haven’t picked out your costume yet, these 3 recipes are sure to get you in the spooky spirit.

Caramel Candy Corn Popcorn Mix

Caramel Candy Corn Popcorn mix is sugar, spice, and everything nice.  The pretzels and popcorn are crunchy and salty. Mixed with Reese’s pieces and caramel chunks, it’s a dream mix for those who like a little savory with their sweet. And you can’t celebrate Halloween without candy corn, can you? – so there’s plenty where that came from too.

Black Widow Popcorn

If you aren’t serving or eating something with googly eyes, can you really say you celebrated Halloween? Simply coat your popcorn with black candy melts and add your favorite sprinkles and decorations. We’re not sure if the kids will like decorating or eating this black widow popcorn more – but either way, it’s a win, win.

Witches’ Brew Popcorn Mix

If you’re a fan of dirt cake, you’ll love this bright green popcorn mix. We used food color spray (that we picked up at a local craft store) to turn the popcorn green, then added gummy worms, mini Oreos, and skittles. For shock value, serve it in the biggest cauldron you can find and sprinkle in a few plastic spiders. It’s the perfect centerpiece for your annual Halloween party.
