If your New Year’s resolution starts in the kitchen, it’s likely you have one of the following goals on your 2018 to-do list – incorporate more smoothies into your morning routine, save some money by making your own juice at home (those wheatgrass shots and juice bar drinks add up), eat more fruits and vegetables. These are all achievable goals if you have the right appliances in your kitchen and the right information to get started.

Fresh juice and smoothies are extremely popular post-holiday season as people put away the casserole dishes and the cookie tins. If you can’t decide whether a juicer or a blender (or both) is right for your kitchen, our Test Kitchen experts are here to help.

Revitalizing Berry Juice

While juicers and blenders are both great appliances to help add more nutrition into your diet, there are some key differences.

Carrot Turmeric Tonic

Juicers make it easy to get all the fruits and vegetables you need in one thirst-quenching glass. Juice is extracted from the fruits and vegetables leaving little pulp or fiber. The result is  concentrated nutrition in a cup that’s easy to drink and digest. What’s great about juice, experts say, is the nutrients are highly concentrated, so you don’t have to drink a lot of it to reap the benefits. Some of our favorite juice recipes include carrot turmeric tonic, energizing green juice with broccoli, celery and apple, and dawn delight red juice with beets.

Blenders can create hunger-satisfying smoothies that are thicker and packed with fiber, so you may feel full longer. But they can also make so much more – like soups, nut butters, marinades, and salad dressings. Unlike juicers, blenders let you add in extra ingredients like yogurt, protein powder, and chia seeds to provide additional nutrition and flavor in your smoothies. You can even swap the straw for a spoon and add toppings like honey and granola to a smoothie bowl. We’re currently loving these smoothie recipes – cucumber melon smoothie, berry blast protein smoothie, and everything green power smoothie. You can also use your blender to make whole juice. Blend fruits and vegetables together without removing the pulp or adding anything extra to the mix (like yogurt, something you might add to make a smoothie).  Try our detox whole juice with apple cider vinegar.

Green Power Smoothie

Both appliances are great ways to increase the nutrition in your diet by introducing more fruits and vegetables (remember your goal to eat more fruits and veggies? Check). Selecting the appliance that fits best into your lifestyle is the true key to success. Do you want to ward off hunger by drinking nutrient-rich smoothies packed with fiber and enhanced with nut butters or yogurt? A high-performance blender fits your bill. Or, do you want a juice that’s nutrient-dense and thirst-quenching? A juicer will do the job.

Kale, Cucumber and Cilantro Green Juice from Everyday Good Thinking, the official blog of @hamiltonbeach

Don’t be intimidated by the vibrant appearance of green juices. They can be incredibly revitalizing and are commonly regarded as an excellent boost to your health. Adding a sweet fruit like an apple to your juice can mellow the “green” flavor and increase your juice’s drinkability. We used this technique here, creating a light, cool juice that will leave you feeling refreshed and invigorated.

The holidays are over, 2015 is here and you’re looking to get healthy, boost your energy and feel amazing… sound about right?

The one thing I always tell my health coaching clients is that you don’t have to overhaul everything in your life at once. In fact, doing so is usually a bad idea because most people dive in full-force, then get burnt out and end up going back to old ways in just a few short months.

At the end of the day it’s about making small, manageable changes. These changes may not seem like much, but implemented over time, they really add up and can make a huge difference in your health. A couple ideas include riding your bike to work instead of driving, toting around a water bottle so you stay hydrated throughout the day or swapping your morning cup of joe for a nutrient-packed green juice — like the one I’m sharing today.

Why collard greens? Kale is the superstar of dark leafy greens, but collards are packed with nutrients, vitamins and minerals as well and they tend to produce more juice than kale. Load up your juicer with a few collard leaves for a healthy dose of carotenoids, Vitamin K, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, folate and manganese.

This particular combo combines all of my favorite green juice components — apples, cucumber, grapefruit, ginger and lemon — along with the collard greens. The mixture has a vibrant green color, a sweetness from the apple and grapefruit and a tiny kick from the fresh ginger. One glass and you’ll feel energized and ready to take on the day!

If you’re anything like me, the last month has been filled with holiday festivities including cookie swapping, cocktail sampling, late-night parties and burrowing under the blankets to catch up on sleep (at the expense of morning workouts). Even though I am typically a clean-eating, go-getting, exercise machine, I have absolutely no regrets about these annual indulgences because great memories were made in the process.  But by the time each New Year rolls around, I’m ready to hit the reset button and get back to a healthier lifestyle.

Golden Beet Zinger from @thefitfork for @hamiltonbeach

I don’t like to make strict New Year’s resolutions, per se. Instead of fixating on goals I may or may not achieve, I prefer to focus on keeping exercise and eating right fun. With this easy-going, more forgiving attitude, I’ve been able to maintain a healthy lifestyle over the long haul – and, occasional indulgences have always been part of the balanced journey!  One way I keep healthy eating interesting and fun is with visits to the farmers’ market to pick from the kaleidoscope of colorful produce that comes straight from local vendors – everything is so wonderfully fresh and tasty.

Golden Beet Zinger from @thefitfork for @hamiltonbeach

Recently, I selected some gorgeous golden beets – before this, I had never seen or tasted anything but a red beet.  Remembering that powerful phytonutrients in beets are diminished by heat, I decided that a raw recipe would be best.  A shaved salad came to mind first, but I was itching to use my new Big Mouth® Pro Juice Extractor. This easy-to-use machine reduces whole fruits and vegetables in seconds to make healthy drinks, so it only makes sense to combine some of my favorite fruit and veggies into a nutrient-packed juice.

Golden Beet Zinger from @thefitfork for @hamiltonbeach

My recipe for Golden Beet Zinger is naturally sweet thanks to a green apple and decidedly invigorating due to the generous allotment of ginger. The betalains (a type of phytonutrient) inherently abundant in beets have been shown to aid in antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and detoxification support of the body and ginger is an equally wondrous root that comes to the aid of many things including digestion. Just a little 2 to 3-ounce shot of this Golden Beet Zinger is needed to kickstart your health.

Another way to enjoy the Golden Beet Zinger is to mix it with sparkling water and pour over ice like a spritzer. The flavor mellows down a bit and the carbonated bubbles make the sipping experience a refreshing treat after a workout or as an afternoon pick-me-up.  I’d also play healthy bartender and serve these up as a healthy, no-hangover alternative to a cocktail.

Now, to keep workouts fun, I’m stepping out of my comfort zone as a long-time runner to find some new fitness activities to embrace. Mixing up the routine keeps exercise (and life in general) much more interesting.  Right now, I’m intrigued by gymnastic classes for adults, tennis lessons, and just jumping around on the trampoline with my kids.

What about you? Is there a certain fitness class or sport you’ve wanted to try?
