National Pizza Day is February 9th so this week is dedicated to one thing and one thing only – pizza. Whether you prefer Hawaiian, meat lovers, Greek, pepperoni, or plain old cheese, I think we can all agree that pizza is a go-to and hardly (if ever) disappoints.

White Pizza with Arugula and Sun-dried Tomatoes

The Test Kitchen developed this white pizza with arugula and sun-dried tomatoes.

White Pizza with Arugula and Sun-dried Tomatoes

This refreshing pie breaks from the standard mozzarella and marinara pizza formula. Instead, the Test Kitchen brushed the homemade pizza dough (you can use store bought too) with a mixture of olive oil, garlic, and Italian seasoning.

After baking the oil-brushed dough for about 10 minutes at 475 degrees, remove the pizza from the oven and sprinkle shredded fontina and parmesan cheese on top of the crust. Bake for another 5 minutes until the cheese is fully melted then remove from the oven and finish your pie.

Toss fresh arugula and sun-dried tomatoes with your favorite Italian vinaigrette. This tangy mixture will be the main attraction of this vegetarian-friendly pizza. Toss the arugula and sun-dried tomatoes onto the crust, sprinkle with the remaining cheese and a little black and red pepper. Finish with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and voila!

White Pizza with Arugula and Sun-dried Tomatoes

You won’t need to make a side salad because this pizza is basically a pizza and salad in one. You get crispy, crunchy crust, plenty of greens, sun-dried tomatoes, and salty cheese in each and every bite. When you’re craving pizza but want something a little lighter (and greener) than the usual pepperoni delivery order, make this vegetarian pie at home.

Instructions
  1. Prepare Pizza Crust dough.
  2. Heat oven to 475°F. If using a pizza stone, place in oven to preheat.
  3. Dust cutting board with flour. Roll dough into a 14-inch diameter.
  4. Place dough in pizza pan or sprinkle a pizza peel with cornmeal and slide dough on peel. In a small bowl, combine olive oil, garlic and Italian seasoning.
  5. Brush olive oil mixture on crust. Prick bottom of crust with a fork to keep from bubbling. Place pizza pan in oven or slide pizza onto pizza stone.
  6. Bake 10 minutes. Sprinkle with shredded fontina and 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese. Return to oven and bake until cheese is melted, about 5 minutes.
  7. In a medium bowl, toss arugula with basil, sun-dried tomato halves and vinaigrette. Arrange over melted cheese. Sprinkle with remaining Parmesan cheese, black and red pepper. Squeeze lemon juice over pizza, if desired.

Nothing com-pears, nothing com-pears, to you. Are you singing yet? Prince said it first, but this fall we’re saying it again. With apples and pumpkins in the limelight this time of year, it’s easy to forget about pears. But don’t.

Pears

There are many different types of pears – from Asian, to Bartlett, to Comice. But Bartlett pears are most commonly found at the grocery store and are light green/yellow in color (their colour changes as they ripen). They’re slightly sweet and extremely juicy – and “pear-shaped” in every sense of the description.

We hope these three recipes will get your excited to incorporate pears into your menu this fall. Set aside the apples and the pumpkin puree for a day and prepear to fall in love with one of our favourite seasonal ingredients.

Pear & Gorgonzola Naan Pizza

Making homemade pizza is a lot of fun – and some would even say easy, especially when you take making your own pizza dough out of the equation. Using naan bread is a delicious substitute. It crisps up nicely on the grill, making the perfect crust for a personal pizza. We topped our naan pizza with pears, caramelized onions, and creamy gorgonzola cheese. Garnish your pizzas with a sprinkle of fresh rosemary to complete the pear-fect bite.

You’ve probably noticed spiralized vegetables make a beautiful – not to mention healthy –  substitute for pasta, but what about using them as toppings for a colorful pizza? It took very little time to convince ourselves this was a great idea. And while we may have just been searching for an excuse to ask the Test Kitchen to develop another delicious pizza recipe, it worked out in our favour.

We spiralized carrots, zucchini and yellow squash for our Spiralizer Veggie and Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto Pizza. We also sliced red onion for an additional pop of color on our pie. While we found this combination of vegetables to be particularly appealing to both our eyes and stomachs, you can easily mix and match your favorite seasonal veggies.

We used our favourite store-bought pizza crust to save us some time in the kitchen but making your own pizza dough in the bread machine only takes about 20 minutes. We spread sun-dried tomato pesto evenly over the crust and then placed mozzarella slices over the pesto. After placing the veggie spirals between two paper towels to help remove most of the moisture, we spread them out over the cheese then topped them with, you guessed it, even more parmesan cheese.

Bake for 8 to 10 minutes at 450 degrees and it’s pizza time. While you could definitely make this pizza for a Friday night in with the family (it’s a great way to get the kids to eat more vegetables), it would definitely be the topic of conversation at any dinner party. The colorful spirals pop on top of the white mozzarella cheese and it’s almost too pretty to eat. Almost.

Sprializer Veggie and Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto Pizza
Ingredients
  • 1 large carrot
  • 1 medium zucchini
  • 1 medium yellow squash
  • 1 thin crust Italian pizza crust
  • 1/2 cup Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto
  • 8 ounces fresh mozzarella, sliced 1/4-inch thick
  • 1/2 small red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
Instructions
  1. Heat oven to 450°F.
  2. Using a Spiralizer, cut carrot, zucchini and yellow squash in spirals. You will need about 1 cup of each. Place spirals between two layers of paper towels and squeeze to remove as much moisture as possible; set aside. Reserve any remaining spirals for another use.
  3. Spread Sun-Dried Tomato Pesto in an even layer over pizza crust. Place mozzarella slices over pesto. Arrange veggie spirals evenly over cheese. Sprinkle with red onion slices. Top with Parmesan cheese.
  4. Place pizza directly on oven rack. Bake until cheese is melted and crust is browned, 8 to 10 minutes.

Kids love to get in on the fun for Valentine’s Day, so why not get creative in the kitchen as a family? Use our delicious homemade pizza dough for a DIY party at home this Valentine’s Day. For the main course, we suggest everyone’s favorite – pepperoni pizza. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to create pepperoni hearts out of deli pepperoni and place them on the pizza, then bake according to your favorite recipe. We used some large and some small hearts and kept it simple with mozzarella cheese and a traditional red sauce. For dessert, we’re making Nutella dessert pizza.
